One Weekend Project: How to make a Wood Top Side Table

Homelovers!

How are you guys doing today! Ready for a great weekend! We have a packed weekend full of basketball games, Cinco de Mayo, mexican food, church and hopefully sleeeeep:0)  I hope you had a chance to visit me over at The Handmade Home the other day, guest posting from my friend Ashley!! She’s so awesome, you don’t want to miss her blog!

Today I’m sharing a project that I've been wanting to do for about a YEAR now, but finally decided to DO it a few days ago! Does that happen to you guys? You think and think and think about a project until it just has no more room in your project collecting brain and you finally have to GET IT OUT by GETTING IT DONE! This project only took me one day to complete. Naptime, kids, dinner and life included, so I know you will be able to knock this out in one weekend:0)

I guess you can call them reclaimed wood tables, wood top tables, or what ever you like but all I know is that I love them! Here’s how I made mine…

How to make a wood top table-06 copy

I had a couple of these plain jane end tables in my family room already. They were apart of a group set that we purchased when we were first married. So I bought some poplar wood stripes in various sizes from HomeDepot (take your measurements with you to the store) , cut them to fit the top (I used a borrowed compound miter saw!!), liquid nail them to the table and let it all dry.

How to make a wood top table

I placed some heavy paint cans on top so that they wouldn’t curve up or buckle with the liquid nail. I totally should have grabbed some clamps while I was at Home Depot but I forgot! After a few hours or so I removed the cans and gave the tables a light sanding with my mouse sander. It’s important to have a smooth finish before staining anything so that your stain will soak in nice and evenly. After that I cleaned the tables off with a tack cloth.

Next I pulled out my oh so yummy, MinWax stain in walnut and began to stain the tops. I covered them about two times to get the finish you see below.

For some character I added wood nails and spilt the wood. Awesome right? Just kidding, I wanted to screw down the corners that didn’t get the full affect of my paint can holding technique. But that didn’t really work out because I ended up splitting the wood almost in two. But I didn’t want to start all over! So now it’s apart of the tables “character” haha! Sometimes ya just gotta roll with it. It can’t be perfect all the time right? Yes, you agree:0)

So here they are in my family room. I love them! The two tones are a great way to break up some the finishes in the room and it was SO easy you guys. Like slap some glue on a stick easy:0)

Can you guys knock out this One Weekend Project? If you do let me know!

PS…I know you guys pretty well so… my lamps came from Homegoods, my real life fern came from Home Depot and my pillows; the gray and houndstooth are homemade, floral from Etsy and the solid green is from World Market! Booyah!

New {Seven Dollar }Side Table

A few weekends ago my mom and I, she’s my shopping partner in crime:0) went out to a few of the Goodwills and Savers around town. I found a few items but my favorite was this 7.oo table I picked up from Savers.

It had beautiful lines and great details! I knew all it needed was a fresh coat of paint. SO I brought it home and doll it up for our family room:0) It looked like it was a mix of veneers and real wood so I decided not to sand it. I just cleaned up the dust and primed it with a coat of gray.

You can see in this the dark gray primer(Krylon) under the lighter gray paint that I had left over from the boys room. I used a cheap sponge brush to apply it. I love using those thing:0)  SO much easier on small projects like this! To get the more detailed areas, I used a light gray spray paint from Krylon, again.

So that would be THREE different grays I used:0)

The result it a pretty grayed little table that sits next to one of our sofas in the family room. When I paint furniture I don’t try to get it perfect. I dab, stroke, sand and chip away at it. I leave some parts “unfinished” to get that it’s been here forever look.

I fell in LOVE with the pictured white lamps from Homegoods. I picked up two of them and sat one of them on my new table:0) Thanks to a loaded gift card from my mom and dad and sister…they were free to me! yes!

IMG_7237_8602IMG_7220_8592

I lightly sanded some areas so that the darker color could be seen. I also added a crystal knob that I had from an extra curtain tie back. I added these baskets that my MOM got for me. I think they were 2.00 for a set of 6.

Another peak of the lamp. So curvy!!! I really REALLY adore these lamps. Anytime I walk in to Homegoods I’m drawn to that section:0)

So fun! I also have a table that I’m SANDING(seems like I never sand anymore:0) that has been in my office for a while!

{REPLACING DRAPES}

IMG_7118_8578IMG_7099_8561

I’m replacing all my before drapes with my FAVORITE drapes from JCPenney:0) NOW most people would pass these up judging by the PICTURE alone! LOL! But, I draped my windows in my old house with these in a linen color(pinch pleat) and now I’m ordering them in cream for 4 big windows!

image

Best budget advice. Order a set or two every two weeks;0) These drapes are a steal I tell you at at 80.00 a pair for 108 inches… pure loveliness! BUT replacing all four BIG windows can be expensive if you do it all at once!  I LOVE LOVE LOVE these drapes:0) They have a gazillion colors too. The ones I had in my Buckeye home had a linen look to them during the day but a night it has this gorgeous sheen!

IMG_7098_8560

I LOVED banding the old ones in that paisley fabric…but remember, I couldn’t find it anymore:0( So I will be doing the same things to these pretty drapes! Can’t wait to show you guys! So EASY and gives your drapes a “custom”touch:0)

{LIVING AND DINING ROOM}

Still working on this room:0) Picking drapes, and RUGS and couple of new chairs:0)

Yellow Sideboard

Last week I was thinking about painting my chocolate brown Stornas Ikea Sideboard also know as the MARKOR sideboard,  a pretty yellow. Well, I thought about it and I did it:0) and it is one pretty piece of furniture.

I went to my local Ace Hardware Store and picked up a quart of Ben Moores Hawthorn Yellow. The paint sample I picked up was a perfect yellow for this space because it was beautifully muted. I didn’t want a yellow pastel nor a orange yellow. I brought along a sample of my wallpaper and it coordinated very well together so I went with it! I didn’t want a high gloss on the sideboard so I went with a satin finish and added a clear gloss on top for easy cleaning.

After it was painted and dried I added the original hardware back on, a deep bronze, because it tied in with my floors perfectly! The end result looked very similar to my original inspiration picture:0) But of course about a few hundred dollars less..yessssa!

Here’s a look at the the Ikea sideboard in the space.

Remember the original…

I picked up these two matching lamps from HomeGoods. I’m a  sucker for curves:0) The lamp shades have this beautiful texture on them which I absolutely loved. I snatched these ones up real quick. You know that’s a rule if you shop at Homegoods;0)

Then I added my mirror that I picked up from HomeGoods for 18.00 back in 07! I laid it horizontally and up against the wall for a more relaxed look.

Then I added some fun accessories that I picked up from stores like Hobby Lobby, Ross and Target.

Another one saved.....

Pin It Well, I've been wanting/needing a sofa table for my family room for a while now. I've finally found one on craigslist that look like it had some great potential! But let me tell you, this one started off kinda ruff! lol I spotted her a couple of times on craigslist and each time I went back ....she was still there...nobody wanted her. I eventually contacted the owner and he said he still had her. The only reason I even held back for about 3 weeks was because it was 100.00. But last week the owner actually contacted ME and asked if I still wanted it... I said yeah...would you take 50?? *you gotta negotiate girls*....lol...he responded back yeah and I thought dang...I should have said 30 lol!
Craigslist mugshot....

yeah...I know...hmmm..not so pretty. I think the cat is kinda throwing me off...and the back..has like this tie dyed mirror thing goin on. But still, with a new coat of something I thought it just might work.

When I am looking for something to refinish or paint I usually look for something that is 1.Cheap in cost...but GREAT in quaility and 2. Has some details to it, something that fits my taste:0)...the little columns in the front were just enough!
So Mr. Right aka Hubby aka THAT GUY....went to go pick up the Drexal Heritage orphan*I know fancy right?*....while I stayed with the kiddos because that's just a rule in our house..no pick ups by yourself...you know how it is.

This is her in my garage getting ready for a makeover....MAN she looks better already...I'm telling you it was those cat statues! lol and....the tie dye mirror thing.
Before I started I wiped off the old dust with an all purpose cleaner. The table was actually in PERFECT condition...I kinda felt bad about painting it...well not that bad. I tried to remove the mirror but it was so well made...I would have had to take the entire thing apart....and you know that wasn't happening, so I just sprayed right over it:0)

So after that I got out a can of primer...sprayed on one coat...I think I would have felt better with two, but I was just so impatient:0) I used Krylon Spray Primer....
After THAT I let that dry and applied 2 cans of  Krylon Celery over it for about a 3 hour period. Spray....Dry...Repeat!
sorry...no photos though!:0)

And tadda...here she is....a NIGHT TIME photo.... can you see my hubby?:0) Hi baby!
And a DAY TIME Photo...

and WHY YES, that would be Board and Batten on my back wall.... but we'll talk about that later;0)
And well it turned out great...fabulous...WONDERFUL! and do I LOVE IT???.. YES of course:0)
