One Weekend Project: How to make a Wood Top Side Table

Homelovers!

How are you guys doing today! Ready for a great weekend! We have a packed weekend full of basketball games, Cinco de Mayo, mexican food, church and hopefully sleeeeep:0)  I hope you had a chance to visit me over at The Handmade Home the other day, guest posting from my friend Ashley!! She’s so awesome, you don’t want to miss her blog!

Today I’m sharing a project that I've been wanting to do for about a YEAR now, but finally decided to DO it a few days ago! Does that happen to you guys? You think and think and think about a project until it just has no more room in your project collecting brain and you finally have to GET IT OUT by GETTING IT DONE! This project only took me one day to complete. Naptime, kids, dinner and life included, so I know you will be able to knock this out in one weekend:0)

I guess you can call them reclaimed wood tables, wood top tables, or what ever you like but all I know is that I love them! Here’s how I made mine…

How to make a wood top table-06 copy

I had a couple of these plain jane end tables in my family room already. They were apart of a group set that we purchased when we were first married. So I bought some poplar wood stripes in various sizes from HomeDepot (take your measurements with you to the store) , cut them to fit the top (I used a borrowed compound miter saw!!), liquid nail them to the table and let it all dry.

How to make a wood top table

I placed some heavy paint cans on top so that they wouldn’t curve up or buckle with the liquid nail. I totally should have grabbed some clamps while I was at Home Depot but I forgot! After a few hours or so I removed the cans and gave the tables a light sanding with my mouse sander. It’s important to have a smooth finish before staining anything so that your stain will soak in nice and evenly. After that I cleaned the tables off with a tack cloth.

Next I pulled out my oh so yummy, MinWax stain in walnut and began to stain the tops. I covered them about two times to get the finish you see below.

For some character I added wood nails and spilt the wood. Awesome right? Just kidding, I wanted to screw down the corners that didn’t get the full affect of my paint can holding technique. But that didn’t really work out because I ended up splitting the wood almost in two. But I didn’t want to start all over! So now it’s apart of the tables “character” haha! Sometimes ya just gotta roll with it. It can’t be perfect all the time right? Yes, you agree:0)

So here they are in my family room. I love them! The two tones are a great way to break up some the finishes in the room and it was SO easy you guys. Like slap some glue on a stick easy:0)

Can you guys knock out this One Weekend Project? If you do let me know!

PS…I know you guys pretty well so… my lamps came from Homegoods, my real life fern came from Home Depot and my pillows; the gray and houndstooth are homemade, floral from Etsy and the solid green is from World Market! Booyah!

So naturally when  I see such wonderful surroundings I want to prep my nest for Spring:0) I’ve recently seen some inspiring photos of indoor gardens so I decided to try my hand at some.

So I headed out to my local Walmart to see what I could find.

My first stop was the air freshener isle to try out Renuzit new Fresh Accents freshener. That section is HUGE! So many different types to choose from. I may have spent a few minutes or longer comparing and contrasting:0) What I like about the Renuzit new Fresh Accents freshener is that it’s easy and um, AFORDABLE!.

New Ballard Rug and Slipcovers

I took a two week hiatus from my little ole blog cause I had my wisdom tooth yanked from my mouth:0) Yep, just one.I’m such a baby when it comes to pain!

I know your all anxiously awaiting the fireplace. I won’t tell you soon, because I’ve been saying that for about three weeks now and I think your catching on to my “delay” message strategy , so I’ll just say…. I’m workin on it:0)

Anyway, about that rug….

I purchased a new rug for under my breakfast nook! I had one that my mom got from Robb and Stucky a few years ago thinking it was an indoor/outdoor one but when I went to go and hose it down, I found out it wasn’t. Water spots where everywhere…eek!!. I did manage to clean it thanks to some tips from Katie. So I’ve been on the hunt for a new one ever since and I finally found one at good ole Ballard.

I purchased their very affordable paisley, indoor/outdoor bordered rug in green about a month ago. I got the largest size available which is 7x10 for under 100.00:0) shipping and all!

IMG_9004_0998

I like rugs under my table because when my kiddos make a mess I can just vacuum it up. I tried to live with out a rug and it was just to much trying to keep my dark wood floors spotless.

IMG_9003_0997

Look familiar it’s the sister of my front porch rug:0)

ballard all over paisley outdoor rug

I love Ballard rugs, can you tell?

Now I need some chair covers. I originally was going to sew some myself but my kids are so harsh on our furniture so my dreamy plan of white covered parson chairs has been deleted from my mind. :0)

I did however find these to be great options….

Green Geometric Dana Slipcover

These pretty parson chair slipcovers are so flirty! I think I will get them eventually when they go on SALE. Right now they are 59.00 each and I need four. BUT, I think the greens might clash , so I’m thinking one of them will work great in my new office:0) yippee!!

Couture Chair Slipcover with Ties

This slipcover with ties come in spa blue and green. Love the side details. I’m a sucker for things wrapped in a pretty little bow. But I’m having a hard time seeing Reggie sitting down in these:0) Maybe I should but these in my office chair file options as well:0)

I’m leaning toward these ones from Ballard,

I don’t really like the long skirt, but I think I can do some minor alterations to make it work. It’s a chocolate check pattern that will work great with the color scheme of the entire family room. Right now they are on sale for 29.00 each. With a coupon I think it will be a great price!! FOUR of them for under 100.00!

I’ll let you know what I decide! In the mean while I’m headed back to the fireplace. I don’t know WHY I get so unmotivated towards the end of a project…lol. I need to get myself an extra large sweet tea from Chick-fila and get my booty in gear!!!!! Happy Wednesday!

{REPLACING DRAPES}

image

IMG_7118_8578IMG_7099_8561

I’m replacing all my before drapes with my FAVORITE drapes from JCPenney:0) NOW most people would pass these up judging by the PICTURE alone! LOL! But, I draped my windows in my old house with these in a linen color(pinch pleat) and now I’m ordering them in cream for 4 big windows!

image

Best budget advice. Order a set or two every two weeks;0) These drapes are a steal I tell you at at 80.00 a pair for 108 inches… pure loveliness! BUT replacing all four BIG windows can be expensive if you do it all at once!  I LOVE LOVE LOVE these drapes:0) They have a gazillion colors too. The ones I had in my Buckeye home had a linen look to them during the day but a night it has this gorgeous sheen!

IMG_7098_8560

I LOVED banding the old ones in that paisley fabric…but remember, I couldn’t find it anymore:0( So I will be doing the same things to these pretty drapes! Can’t wait to show you guys! So EASY and gives your drapes a “custom”touch:0)

{LIVING AND DINING ROOM}

Still working on this room:0) Picking drapes, and RUGS and couple of new chairs:0)

Family Room Update with Vinyl Lettering {grace.}

I have had this empty space above my TV,  in my family room for quite sometime. I knew I wanted something simple and meaningful. Something that defined the space we were in and something that represented our family.

So I contacted Leen  the Graphic Queen to get a custom decal made of the word

grace.

She did such a fabulous job and as soon as I saw it, I couldn’t wait to hang it up!

IMG_5164_6606_edited-1

To us this word defines the free gifts that our father in heaven gives us daily… sunsets, smiles, hugs, the breeze, quiet moments, a good phone call, the ability to let it all out, marriages, children, friends, sweet ice cream, summer days, cool nights. Grace to us  means that even though we don’t deserve these gifts he gives them to us freely. Grace means failures forgiven and  His AMAZING GRACE makes my heart want to burst!! So seeing glimpse of this word throughout the day reminds me  to keep my feet firmly planted in his word. It reminds us to be thankful for the time we have had, to use our gifts and talents to praise him, and to LOVE. Because LOVE..agape love is how we are called to love each other.

IMG_5143_6559_edited-1

I  think this song by Matthew West….Only GRACE…..says in perfectly:0)

There is no guilt here
There is no shame
No pointing fingers
There is no blame
What happened yesterday…has disappeared
The dirt has washed away
And now it's clear
There's only grace
There's only love
There's only mercy and believe me it's enough
Your sins are gone
Without a trace
And there's nothing left now
There's only grace
