Adding Global Décor to Your Home

Hello Homelovers!

If you’ve ever wondered if you could add some smokin global flair to your home without going overboard, then today is your lucky day!! wuwu! Adding global décor can be little intimidating, but done the right way it can add some depth to your interior haven. Today I'm going to show you a simple way I added that flair and also give you some other examples of how you can do the same!

Global Accent Wall

This is an accent wall between my kitchen, the hallway and my living room. On the opposite side I have a super fun chalkboard to write messages for my family and to our friends. This wall is seen from the family room and the breakfast nook so it’s a pretty fun piece of interior real-estate..ha! I originally had bead board wall paper on it BUT with the amount of traffic it was getting I knew it wouldn’t really be a great choice. Instead I wanted something that added some interest in that direction and some color to bounce of my pretty neutral kitchen.

So what I did was I used these olive colored paisley decals that I ordered from ByrdieiGraphics and sectioned them out on my wall.

I found it a lot easier to apply the decals by ripping off the paper section by section and peeling back slowly. Otherwise it took me almost 20 minutes for ONE decal! By doing it this way I only spent about 5-7 minutes one.

Using the paisley pattern gives the space just the right amount of UMPH without saying “ LOOK AT ME IM A GLOBAL WALL” lol! I think a nice neutral art piece or a corkboard would be a great added layer over this super fly wall. I will let you know when I find one:0)

Now that you’ve seen an example, I suggest that when your out shopping for global décor remember to look for pieces with great color, interesting texture, and a handmade look. Having to many global pieces will push your space over board and you will feel like your actually living in a market:0) So pick out one or two pieces that makes your heart flutter and…BEGIN!

COLOR

One of my favorite places to shop global on the cheap is World Market. They have everything from colorful rugs to unique hand painted knobs. So for example, you could take this Orange Disco Indoor-Outdoor Rug and use that as your jumping off point or as a piece to play off your existing room with similar colors. Unless you going for a very monochromatic look, what you DON’T want to do is have every single accessory ALL orange, or pink or green. Which seems like easy advice to follow but a lot of homelovers think they have to have a similar color in each piece they choose for their homes. But that’s not true! Instead of going for the matchy matchy look. Give it a good mix! The easiest way to do this is to start with a neutral base (walls, sofas or chairs) and pull colors from the global item or piece and use it in your accessories. Once that’s done add a contrast piece to finish it off. I love adding black & white to my rooms!

TEXTURE

To add texture to a room I like to use rugs like sisal, bamboo or a short shag. But another fun way to add texture to a room is to use feathers! It’s bit scary at first but it actually can work if used in small doses or as a center piece. It’s only when you start to feather up your ENTIRE home you’ll see disaster starting to strike. Check out this amazing piece made of feathers. I first spotted it on Candice Tells All and then again on the Nate Show. To purchase an original your going to have to fork over a pretty penny. The small one starts and $1500 dollars. Oh.

But I’m in love with them and I’m pretty sure their hackacble. Just gotta go find a thousand feathers:0) Let’s DO IT!!! I can’t get over that big bird yellow!

DIY Kitchen Shelves

IMG_2649 copy

As I thought about giving our kitchen a update with painted cabinets, new hardware, etc. I knew I also wanted to work in  open shelves into the plan. I think open shelves are a great way to add instant character to what can normally be a very ordinary space. There are so many different looks and options! But adding shelving doesn't have to be an a entire kitchen overall. It can be as simple as taking of your cabinet door fronts and adding some beadboard to the backs like my friend Ashley from TheHandmadeHome does. So fresh and so clean:0)

Or you can swap out a small space of uppers.

But because of my lack of KEEPING things organized and tidy( I can organize with the best of them, keeping it that way…um,kind of a challenge!), switching out a small space of uppers seemed like the perfect solution for my kitchen.

The first thing you want to do is take down your upper cabinets. Mine was a single cabinet to the right of my kitchen sink. So it was actually quite easy to remove. I did it by myself in about 10 minutes. But depending on your space you may need some help. So plan accordingly. We don’t want any accidents!

IMG_1859IMG_2301

After removing your cabinet, it’s important to patch up any holes or imperfections with calk or any filler for drywall. I didn’t ,but you should…lol! After it’s dry, paint over the patches and the part where the cabinet once hung.

Then your going to want to take a few measurement to see how WIDE and how LONG you want your shelves. This can be as simple as using masking tape to section off the areas of the shelves and the corbels. I bought my corbels on an ebay bid. I first spotted theses beauties on Pinterest via UrbanGraceInteriors. It took me about 1.76 seconds to realize that they were PERFECT! I hung mine up using push pins to hold them in place temporarily. I'm all about visualizing. I temporarily hang a lot of my things just to get the look for it…including those café drapes to the left:0)

Get some ideas from places like Pinterest or Houzz. They have a really good selection of photos. Even if you can’t get the EXACT look you can get an idea of how you would like it to look. Here are some things to take into consideration:

  • how thick or thin do you want your shelving?
  • how long or short you want your brackets or corbel?
  • and how much space would you like in between each shelf?
  • do you want them to blend in the the cabinetry?
  • would you like them painted, rustic, glossy? What finish will look best?
  • how much weight will be used on each shelf
  • do you have studs to work with or are you going to need extra support?

Once you’ve decided on the look start preparing your corbels or brackets to be hung. My corbels came with a keyhole so it was pretty simple to hang. Whether your comes with a keyhole or a traditional hole you can use these tips that I found.

DIY SHELVES

For the shelf part your going to need a thick piece of plywood cut to your desired length.(I think mine was about 1/2in thick) I picked up some super cheap scraps at my loca1 ReStore. They cost me about 1.50 each shelf. My shelves are 33x12. Just enough room to hold a full size plate and cake plate.

*Optional:  2in poplar/hobby wood cut to length for the edges of the shelf. You can pick these up at HomeDepot. This piece will give your shelves a slightly thicker look that I added on later.

Lightly sand all your material as needed. Then paint them the desired color.

IMG_2289IMG_2291

I choose this moody blue by SW that I got color matched with my FREE paint from Clark+Kensington paint at ACE I got last weekend. It’s a primer and paint in one so I didn’t need to worry about an extra step.

You can use a paint brush or a sprayer like I did. Those things were painted in no time flat. I love my sprayer!!!!! I’ll talk about that more in my cabinet post.

After they dried I hung my corbels up and gave the shelves a test run. I liked them a lot! BUT I wanted them to be slightly thicker or chunkier:0)  So instead of starting over I just add a piece of 2 in hobby pieces of wood to the front and sides with 2 inch nails and liquid nails.

Then I took the shelves down and gave it another coat of paint on the sides and on the bottom. After they dried for a few hours I hung them up! I attached the shelves with liquid nail and allowed it to dry over night. ( With all types of décor on it of course…lol) I'm so impatient sometimes!

I love the color. I love the way they look. I just LOVE them! Here they are all styled up:0)

DIY Pallet Art

I'm getting there! This is the LAST project before I reveal my living room and dining room to you guys! It’s been a year in the making, I cant believe it:0) But now that the holidays are over I always get stuck with POST Christmas decorating. I never know whether to winter up my house with winter décor or head right into spring with wreaths and greenery. To be honest it feels like Spring here in Phoenix so its kinda hard to have cold weather décor hanging when its 65 degrees outside:0) So for my front room I decided to use some everyday décor for now.

INSERT-> DIY PALLET ART

Pinterest is the first place I saw PALLET art and basically what it is, is you take a shipping pallet and use the wood to create a piece of art or sign. We all know I LOVE to decorate with signs because it gives any room instant charm. But what I love about this particular type of art is the materials used. Something super simple can be recycled to make something beautiful.

My friend Katie from Sweet Rose Studio ( I’m such a name dropper…ha) created her own version and gifted it to her newlywed friends. So sweet right?! Check out how she made hers here.

Here are some more organic examples…

So this isn't anything new per say but I did want to show you how I made mine!

 IMG_1662

First off I didn’t have any pallets near me. Well I did, the builder around the corner has some stacked up in a dirt filled corner. But know one is ever around and I feel so bad just taking them…lol! But I think craigslist would be a great source to look for them. I just never made the time.

So I just used some wood that I had left over from my DIY Fireless Fireplace and Mantel Project.

First, I cut them down to size and glued them all together with some wood glue and let that sit for a couple of hours.

IMG_1624IMG_1633

IMG_1625IMG_1636IMG_1637

I wanted a more finished look so I added a trim using 1x2s. I also attached them using wood glue.

I put some weight on everything so that it would sit nice and tight bond together. I let that sit overnight as well. (If you need to you can sand any rough spots. But I didn’t need to:0)

The next day I painted some left over yellow from my buffet around the trim and painted the inside with left over Valspar Oatbran from some other house projects.

Then I added some vinyl that I cut with my Silhouette machine.

IMG_1638IMG_1639IMG_1640

And there you have it sittin pretty on my mantel!

As far as the saying, it’s song by Gungor. I've had it stuck in my head now for a good two months now..hehe ( I ALWAYS have a song in my head. You too? ) I don’t know if you’ve heard it or not but it’s soooo sweet! “You make beautiful things, you make beautiful thing out of us.” Take a listen…I know you'll love it:0)
